non-suit The renouncing by the plaintiff of a suit before the verdict, e.g., on discovery of a defect. Refers also to the withdrawal by a judge of the case from the jury, and the direction of the verdict in the defendants favour. Nonsuit in the High Court has been replaced by discontinuance.
