detain To hold or keep back to restrain from going or proceeding; to stop; to withhold adversely. It is implicit in the word detain that the person detained wanted to proceed further but was not allowed to do so. The words have been detained leave no manner of doubt that the act of detaining must be by another person in authority. According to the ordinary meaning, the word detain means to keep back. |
