cross-examination A stage in the examination of a witness designed to elicit information concerning facts in issue favourable to the party on whose behalf it is conducted, and to throw doubt on the accuracy of evidence given against that party. Known also as corss-examination to the issue . Counsel may ask in corss-examination leading questions and questions designed to test knowledge, memory or to elicit existence of bias of previous contradictory statements. |
