arbitration

The settling of a dispute by an arbitrator. Where arbitrators cannot agree they may appoint an umpire . The decision of an arbitrator is known as an award . Procedure on arbitration is based on the ordinary rules rules of English law. An award may be enforced, with leave of the High Court, as an order of the court. Where so directed by the High Court, an arbitrator or umpire must state, in the from of a special case for the opinion of the High Court, an award or question of law arising. A specialised form of country court procedure is also called arbitration but is outside the Arbitration Acts.
